O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She advanced to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performances. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and second lowest. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following numerous outstanding performances. After two more breathtaking performances on September 7, 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner reported that newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
